Cars of the 'Mad Men' Era
Now that the final season of AMC's "Mad Men" series is underway, we thought this would be a good time to highlight some popular and highly styled cars of the '60s in our gallery.
We were somewhat saddened when lead character Don Draper opted for a Cadillac Coupe deVille and not a '63 Buick Riviera as his first luxury car. The producers said Draper's decision on the Caddy was "aspirational" and maybe so, but that car seemed a much better choice for Roger Sterling or one of the other gray-haired partners. Draper, by comparison, was still just a young Turk and the choice of the Riv would have been spot-on. When the car debuted in late '62, it was spectacularly designed, full of power and very trendy. With John F. Kennedy as President, the country was still youth-oriented and focused on the future. The sleek Riviera told the story well, while the stodgy Caddy simply couldn't compare.
One ad for the Riviera shows a Draper-like figure from behind, his head tilted to the side as he ponders a sleek silver coupe with red interior (ironically, the same color choice as Draper's TV Caddy). Below is a tagline that reads, "Should you have a pilot's license when you drive a Riviera?"
Now, let's take a look at some other rides of the "Mad Men" era:
