Finally, some serious horsepower for 'Toyobaru' twins

After waiting a long three years, fans of the "Toyobarus" -- Subaru's BRZ coupe and its sister Toyota FR-S -- are wondering if they will ever see a powerplant that delivers more speed than the relatively modest 200hp flat four now under the hood.

Every once in a while, there's speculation about more horsepower for this engine (known as the FA-20), including the possible installation of Subaru's 250-horsepower turbo lurking in the Forester XT or the 268-horspower version in the WRX.  Well, if you're tired of waiting, you can now turn to vaunted British tuner Cosworth, which has just released its  Supercharged Stage 2.0 Power Package at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas.

The supercharger
The package includes Cosworth's own top-end supercharger that delivers a claimed 60-plus horsepower over stock for $6,495 (labor extra, of course).  There's also a unique intake manifold, new intercooler, calibration, belts, silicone hoses and pipework. Says Cosworth: "As with all Power Packages, the components in this package have been designed from the outset in harmony with each other to produce a specific tune level."

If this isn't enough, Cosworth says you can add their proprietary exhaust system to create the Stage 2.3 Power Package at a claimed 80 horsepower over stock.  At press time, no price had been announced for this grouping.  Budget-minded enthusiasts can opt for a claimed 15 horsepower without the supercharger by selecting an entry-level package at $995.

For more information, check the Cosworth website as the company continues to provide updates on the new FA-20 packages.
