1964 Amphicar: Collectible on land or at sea

1964 Amphicar 770 convertible owned by Jeff Elson

WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING
While Americans like to hit the sand and surf during the warmer weather, Jeff Elson can do both without leaving the wheel of his four-seat Amphicar. The German-built convertible is known as “the sportscar that swims” for its ability to convert from a four-wheeled land vehicle to a boat in just minutes.  With doors sealed and the bilge (drain) plug in place, a driver can plunge into the water, put the car in neutral and use a second lever to activate the twin screw propellers at the rear.  The front wheels act as rudders.  The Amphicar was a sales disaster when it was manufactured from 1961 to 1965, with less than 4,000 built and many still on dealer lots after production ended.  Today, it has become a hot collectible, with, according to Elson, only about 600 such vehicles surviving and no others known on his home turf of Long Island.  “The belly of the car is Porsche,” he says.  “The engine is a four-cylinder Triumph, the steering is VW and it is all put together and it floats.”  Until recently, enthusiasts were able to claim that the Amphicar was the only non-military amphibious vehicle ever put into production.

HOW LONG HE’S OWNED IT
Since February 2014

WHERE HE FOUND IT
He bought it at a classic car auction in Arizona.

CONDITION
Elson took his Amphicar to local restorer AutoMat to bring the convertible back to life.  “My Amphicar is a fifty-year-old car that has been restored to better than original condition,” he says.  “The car was in good visual condition and AutoMat found and fixed all the mechanicals, electrical, interior and more.”

TIPS FOR OWNERS
“Be careful when you buy at auctions,” he advises.  “Speak to car clubs that relate to your model car.”  Experts cite rust, water seals and the high cost of parts as obvious issues on these cars.  Enthusiasts can join the International Amphicar Owners Club, where drivers gather at shorelines around the country for periodic “swim-ins.”  Elson recently posted a “maiden voyage” video of his ride on YouTube.  A popular bumper sticker for these cars says “I Brake for Fish.”

VALUE
Elson estimates the value of his restored ride at “over $100,000.”

THE BOTTOM LINE
“I have always wanted this exceptional piece of German history,” he says.  “You can drive on land at 70 miles per hour and then go into the water and travel at seven knots (about eight miles per hour).  This is the only car that can swim with the fish.  You cannot find a better Amphicar anywhere.”

1936 Auburn Replica: Cloning a lost piece of auto history

9/22/2014

1936 Auburn boattail speedster replica owned by Ralph Scancarelli

WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING
With its rakish grille, pontoon fenders and sloping tail, the Auburn speedster – known as the Model 852 – has one of the most recognizable shapes in the collector car world.  The cars were also known for their advanced engineering and developed quite a reputation in racing circles.  While Auburn ended production after 1936, the speedster has lived on through a number of “replicar” manufacturers, starting in 1968 with Glenn Pray’s Auburn Cord Duesenberg Company.  Like other replicas, Scancarelli’s car sports modern underpinnings: a 350-cubic-inch V-8 engine with automatic transmission, power steering, a modified General Motors chassis, full coil spring suspension, and front disc and rear drum brakes.  The cream white body is hand-laid fiberglass and the speedster also features custom-painted red wheels, custom leather interior, power windows, and heating and air conditioning.  “It’s a unique deco design,” says Scancarelli.  “A real eye-catcher.”

HOW LONG HE’S OWNED IT
Scancarelli has owned the car since 2011.  “It took around a year to build, from start to finish,” he says.  “I was researching it for over two years and my wife gave me the OK to purchase it.”

WHERE HE FOUND IT
“I found a factory in Florida that builds Auburns,” he says.  “They produce around seven cars a year. I took a family vacation to meet the owner at the factory. I test-drove it and asked a lot of questions.  I worked out a price with the options I wanted.  Throughout the building process, he sent me updated pictures.  When the car was ready, I went to Florida to inspect and drive it, and then had the car transported by truck.”

CONDITION
“It’s a custom, factory-made replica built to original specs with modern options and low miles,” he says.

TIPS FOR OWNERS
“When buying a new or used car, always do your homework,” Scancarelli advises.  “Whether researching online or in person, ask a lot of questions and make sure you get the right answers.”

VALUE
“The Auburn I purchased was $95,000,” he says.  “You can find used replica Auburns for around $35,000 to $60,000, depending on mileage, condition and options. Original 1936 Auburns go for about $400,000 and up.”

THE BOTTOM LINE
“I feel like I’m going back in time,” Scancarelli says.  “The car is very unique.  I always enjoyed looking at older cars. I also remember my grandfather telling me stories of cars he wished he’d kept. The deco lines of the car are so unique it’s like rolling artwork. Purchasing a replica Auburn gave me the opportunity to enjoy a classic car with all the modern performance at a price I can afford. I look to have many more years of enjoyment with the car, with my kids and going to car shows and cruise nights.”

1997 Toyota Supra: Samurai in gloss black

1997 Toyota Supra owned by William Orgera

WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING
With some Japanese cars setting records at the recent Monterey Car Week auctions, it's clear that enthusiasts are turning their attention to the Far East.  Toyota enthusiasts still lament the decision to end production of the Supra, sold in the U.S. from 1979 until 1998.  As a result, these older models are moving up in the collectability rankings.  Orgera’s sleek, black coupe has only 46,000 miles, removable roof panels and engine upgrades taking it to 600 horsepower.  “The Supra is a well-known car in the import industry and is often praised for its great performance and looks,” he says.

HOW LONG HE’S OWNED IT
Since 2007

WHERE HE FOUND IT
A nearby owner advertised it in the local newspaper.

CONDITION
Orgera recites a list of well over two dozen modifications to the Supra.  “The car has all original paint minus the custom bumper, side skirts and rear wing,” he says.  “The fuel system has been upgraded with stainless steel braided lines and is running dual pumps in the tank.  The interior has been converted to all black, with brand new Sparco (racing) seats and harnesses for the road course.”  Drag racing tires contain the high horsepower and upgraded brakes increase the stopping power.

TIPS FOR OWNERS
“If you have a budget, usually double it because nothing is ever a smooth and easy operation,” Orgera advises.  “But it is always worth it in the end and always rewards me with a large smile on my face.”

VALUE
“The car is priceless to us and hopefully will never have to be sold and will remain in the family,” he says.  The NADA Guides places a “clean retail” value of $22,925 on an unmodified 1997 Supra and has not yet placed it in the classic car category.

THE BOTTOM LINE
“This car is a family project,” Orgera says. “It was purchased by my father and me to bond and attended car shows. We sat down and planned each part of the build together. I have people follow me, asking questions and mistaking it with a brand new car, because it looks as clean, if not cleaner, as it did when it rolled off the showroom floor. My dad and I often cruise with it and enjoy it together, and I hope to pass it down to my son in the future.”

1937 Ford Panel Delivery: One hot express package

1937 Ford Panel Delivery street rod owned by Bob Nowakowski

WHAT MAKES IT INTERESTING
These rides were the workhorses of the Great Depression, serving as ambulances, police wagons and delivery vans.  Ford was so proud of this model that, for 1937, it built 42 Model 78 Deluxe Panel Delivery vans as an educational fleet to promote sales of Ford parts and accessories to dealers. Only one is known to have survived and it sold at auction in 2006 for $170,500.  The rest were stripped of their special equipment, given a black paint job and sold as used Ford fleet vehicles.  Nowakowski says his customized Panel Delivery "still has many of the original features, such as a crank-out windshield.”

HOW LONG HE’S OWNED IT
Since 2006

WHERE HE FOUND IT
“I purchased it on Long Island (New York) and was able to insure it and drive it home,” he says.

CONDITION
“The original 85-horsepower drive train has been replaced with a Chevy 350-cubic-inch engine and automatic transmission," Nowakowski says. "The truck has been repainted to a bronze color used on the Plymouth Prowler.  I’ve been able to refinish an old oak floor that I found under the carpet.”

VALUE
He values the street rod between $30,000 and $35,000

TIPS FOR OWNERS
“Buy something pretty much completed and add your own touches to it," Nowakowski advises.

THE BOTTOM LINE
““The truck has been owned by a few different owners on Long Island," he says, "including a brewery company, a collector and a restorer. Everybody along the line has added a few features.  I have added a mural of an old repair shop on the side and pictures of the vehicles I have owned in past years.”
